Lash extensions aftercare is simple, and with the right knowledge, you can maintain your extensions for 3 to 4 weeks easily. In this article, I’ll share the 7 most important tips I give my clients to help care for their lash extensions. While there are more tips, these are the key ones that will make the biggest difference in prolonging the life of your extExtensions.
1. Lash Extensions Aftercare – Avoid Water in the First 4 Hours After Your Appointment:
The adhesive used to attach lash extensions takes about 4 hours to fully cure. During this time, exposure to water or steam can weaken the adhesive, causing the extensions to fall off too soon. Once the curing period is over, you can use water on your lashes whenever you want. In fact, it’s important to do so!
2. Cleanse Your Lashes Daily:
This is the best advice you’ll get: Wash your lashes daily with a lash cleanser to remove dirt, oil, makeup, dead skin, and bacteria. It’s also crucial for preventing lash mites! Some clients may think you should never get eyelash extensions wet, but that’s a common misconception. It’s actually important to keep your lashes clean.
Daily cleansing of the lash lines insures the removal of oils, dirt, and residue that would be detrimental to your lash extension retention..”
3. Avoid Cosmetics With Oils:
Many cosmetic products today contain oils like coconut oil, sunflower seed oil, almond oil, and sesame oil. While these are fine when you’re not wearing extensions, oils can weaken the bond between the adhesive and your natural lashes when they seep into the lash line. Over time, this will cause the lash glue to break down, and the extensions will shed. That’s why I always advise my clients to carefully check the ingredient labels of makeup removers, facial cleansers, and moisturizers (anything near the eyes) to ensure they’re oil-free.
4. Don’t Sleep on Your Stomach:
Your sleeping position plays a key role in lash extension aftercare. Ideally, sleep on your back to prevent friction between your extensions and the pillow. I know it’s not always easy—I also dislike sleeping on my back. Additionally, cotton pillowcases can snag or pull on lash hairs, so switching to a silk pillowcase is a great option for lash extension wearers. Many clients who made the switch have seen improved lash extension retention.
5. Brush Your Lashes Daily:
You can use a small spoolie brush to comb through the lashes daily. It honestly just takes a few seconds and I usually recommend doing it in the morning after your makeup routine. Doing so will prevent the extensions to tangle or clump together. It’s important to do it with all types of extensions but even more so with volume lashes because volume fans are more sensitive to tangling. Besides improving the longevity of your lashes, this tip will give them a nice fluff every morning!
6. No Water-Proof Makeup:
Waterproof makeup is the enemy of eyelash extensions. Why? Because it’s so hard to remove, which is exactly the point of waterproof products. Removing it requires either a lot of rubbing or a strong cleanser like an oil-based one, both of which can cause your extensions to shed prematurely. The most common culprit I see is waterproof mascara. These products coat the natural lashes and are notoriously difficult to remove, often causing damage to your extensions in the process.
7. Get Regular Touch-Ups:
Lash extensions naturally shed as your natural lashes grow. Schedule regular touch-up appointments every 2-3 weeks to maintain fullness.
By following these guidelines, you can keep your lash extensions looking beautiful for longer and help maintain the health of your natural lashes.
